As you are no doubt aware, Awesome Games Done Quick wrapped up Saturday night after a tremendous week of speedgaming. The Games Done Quick events have evolved into some of the year’s biggest gaming events and this year’s AGDQ marathon has once again set a new bar for their success.
The GDQ events seem to set a new high mark every year and now it’s starting to get insane. For the first time ever, the $2 million mark has been reached. AGDQ 2017 totaled up over $2.2 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation last week. Of that total, over half of it was raised in the final 24 hours of the marathon, which is ridiculous. Seriously, congratulations to everyone involved with Games Done Quick and major props to anyone who contributed in any way (donations, putting the event together, running games, viewing, etc.). It’s great to see a large portion of the gaming community come together and raise money for a great cause.
If you missed some of the runs or just want to rewatch, you’re in luck. There were a ton of great runs during the marathon and the lovely people of the internet do a superb job of documenting the must see parts of the event. Over on the speedrun subreddit, you can check out the entire vod list for every single run of the marathon if there was a run you missed or something you didn’t happen to catch. If you’re looking for someone to do all the work for you, /u/Kruulos on the Games subreddit compiled a list of some of the top highlights from the marathon. There were so many good runs throughout the event that it would be impossible to list them all here.
Again, a big congratulations to everyone who participates in these marathons. There are certainly a fair amount of criticisms to make of these events and the direction they’ve been taking and all of that, but there’s a bigger picture here. The amount of time and energy that gets put into these events is no small task and the payoff is obviously there because the community responds in force. AGDQ 2017 was another great event for Games Done Quick and I can’t wait until this summer for SGDQ so that we can do it all over again.
