It certainly appears that Overwatch has a new hero on the way. For some time now, fans have believed that the character Doomfist was the most likely candidate to be the next hero in Blizzard’s hit title. On February 17th, Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan posted on the official forums that “24 is not who you think it is,” cryptically stating that the game’s next hero was not Doomfist, but a completely different character. Thanks to some good detective work and some recent posts from Blizzard, it seems players have narrowed in on who the new hero is.
After Kaplan teased the identity of the next hero, Blizzard posted an in-universe interview with a child inventor by the name of Efi Oladele. In this interview, we learned a bit about an 11 year old genius from Numbani who was awarded for achievements in AI and robotics. Just a little Overwatch world building, no big deal. Except of course it’s a big deal, because the only Overwatch stuff we get ends up being fairly relevant to the heroes. So if you know the internet, then you know they were immediately on the case.
Now with a direction, people like /u/Nabakin on the Overwatch subreddit started digging immediately to find any potential clues about this mysterious hero. Suspicions turned towards a recurring spider robot that has appeared in several different trailers and pieces of artwork. Now it’s not an exact science, but it’s fair to say that we have a pretty good idea as to who Hero 24 is; a spider mech created by an 11 year old girl named Efi. We might not know all the details, but we have a general idea of what to expect.
Now turn your attention to this morning, where a teaser was posted on the Overwatch Twitter account. This teaser is an emergency news cast about an unknown attacker destroying defense mechs at the Numbani airport. Let’s put our thinking caps on here for a minute. We have an 11 year old genius from Numbani who works with mechs, a suspiciously recurring spider mech and an attack by an unknown attacker on the Numbani airport. Now I’m no detective, but it sure seems like we know who Hero 24 is. And based on the way Blizzard has handled Overwatch to this point, I won’t be the least bit surprised if Hero 24 is officially announced and playable on the PTR next week.
This was also infinitely better than the Sombra ARG.
UPDATE: There are officially shenanigans afoot. As it turns out, the PTR has already been updated. The map Numbani has been smashed up to match the teaser from earlier this morning and Doomfist’s Gauntlet has been stolen from the payload. Definitely feels like we’ll be getting official word on this one sooner rather than later.
