You couldn’t even make this up if you tried.
George R. R. Martin, the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, is releasing a new book later this year. The book, titled The Book of Swords, is a compilation of 16 stories spanning across the history of the A Song of Ice and Fire series. According to Martin, the book will read more like a history book than a typical novel and will be made up of mini stories at different points in time.
On the one hand, this is kind of neat. Martin’s world building is very good and the A Song of Ice and Fire series has a very rich history that you can learn about in any of the books associated with the series; The World of Ice and Fire in particular. The world has a real history to it and I thoroughly enjoy learning more about it. However, there’s a rather large elephant in the room here that can’t be ignored.
George R. R. Martin is releasing a new book in the series… but it’s not The Winds of Winter. Fans have been waiting six years now for the next installment in the series and despite Martin’s updates, it doesn’t seem all that hopeful that the book is anywhere close to being done. With Game of Thrones rapidly closing in on its series finale, all hope that the book series would end first has evaporated and we likely won’t even see the next book before we know the ultimate outcome of the series. That sucks.
My two cents on the issue is that Martin simply bit off way more than he can chew. Game of Thrones has really simplified the books to translate the story into a tv show. The books consist of so many more complicated storylines that I think Martin is finding it impossible to finish. Game of Thrones has turned gigantic plotlines into scenarios that can be summed up in about a ten minute span or were just flat out removed. The A Song of Ice and Fire books have gotten too detailed and complicated for their own good, making me skeptical that Martin can even tie everything together to reach his end point. If you told me Martin had written and rewritten The Winds of Winter multiple times, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.
Martin’s progress on The Winds of Winter has been a major topic for some time now. As Martin has progressed through the series, writing has stalled to the point where there’s no indication that we’ll ever even see the actual conclusion of the book series. As much as I like Game of Thrones, it has gotten considerably worse since passing book territory in season five and I find the story frustrating to follow in comparison to the books. The idea that we’re going to see the show end first and that we may never even see another book in the series is frustrating for a lot of people. We may ultimately get The Winds of Winter some day, but I’ll be stunned if the idea of getting A Dream of Spring is ever something we’ll even be able to consider.
